DISCLAIMER

This blog is where I record a limited depiction of my feelings, family, and faith. My blog was recently under intense scrutiny, and so I feel this disclaimer is necessary. I try to tell my story as openly as I can, but this blog represents a cropped and narrow-viewed version of my story -- like all social media -- it is NOT the full story. Many events happen behind the scenes that are not recorded or written about, due to the sensitive nature of others involved. Life has many layers. Many layers can be shared and many cannot, and this blog is simply a layer of my life that I allow others to view, but it is not an accurate depiction of all the layers of my life.

Alaska is in my Blood

I lived in Alaska from the time I was age 4, to age 24. It is a unique place full of vast and beautiful landscapes, a large variety of animals, and great diversity in its people. It is truly a place like no other. Had the creators of The Lord of the Rings movies not been from New Zealand, I am confident they would have shot the movies in Alaska -- the Great State is that beautiful. Frodo and Samwise would have enjoyed the land of the Midnight Sun, I am sure of it.

Once you have visited Alaska, its magic gets deep into your blood. (The magic of Alaska is infused into your bloodstream by large Mosquitos.) There is a smell in the air -- a fresh purity -- that is intoxicating. The air is often crisp, and cool, with ever-changing weather. Predicting the weather in Alaska is pointless. The only thing predictable about the weather is that it will change constantly, so you better bring a rain jacket. But there is something about the freshness in the air… it is so yummy. When the clouds clear, and you can see the sky, it is a much more vibrant color of blue than most places, because the air is so clean and pure. (Just so you know, I am speaking of Alaskan summer -- winter is a whole other form of magic involving the color white and freezing temperatures.)

We just spent a few weeks in Alaska. We went to visit my family, and to get a fresh perspective on the world. Alaska is like being in a whole other world, so it really is the perfect place to escape to -- it is a great place to think and ponder the mysteries of life. It was a very healthy, and healing trip for our family, in many ways. I will be writing about our experiences over the next little while. My trip was not a social one, it was meant to be an escape from everything and almost everyone -- so there were no social calls, or party gatherings for us. I have dealt with things in the last few months that I could not have ever dreamed of -- very, very, stressful and traumatic things -- and our little family needed a break! This trip was perfect for us.

So, to begin my recap of our Alaska trip, I wanted to give you a little visual preview of the place of my childhood… the place where I learned how to ponder, dream, and believe in God. If you could experience Alaska, you would know God lives -- only an act of Supreme Deity could create a place so glorious, and magical. If after visiting Alaska you still doubt God's existence, well, then… your heart must be pretty hardened. (I highly recommend softening your heart, and believing in God -- it is the only way to true happiness!)

Charles loved Alaska. He was born there, so his connection ran deep. To him it was Heaven. Had he not met and married me, his plan was to become a hermit in the Alaskan wilderness, living off the land, being free to explore its beauty and wonders. We had been away from Alaska for almost 10 years -- down in the lower 48 -- but he had always hoped to return there, one day. He talked about it, and dreamt about it, constantly. I am certain Charles makes frequent trips to Alaska now.

I only captured the tip of the iceberg with my camera. Alaska is extremely vast, and I was in one small area, but you get the idea…

This is Alaska… this is what is in my blood.

God is the Ultimate Creator… Alaska is one of His Ultimate Creations!

  2. So glad you could come "home!" It was wonderful to have your family here. Cousins loved being together. Stephen keeps praying that you'll come back.
Loved your pictures! Made me ready to do some more exploring around this glorious state (w/ a rain jacket, of course.) : )

    Love, Kary

  3. It is a beautiful place! I am so glad you were able to go and find peace and healing while there. Boise must look pretty bland compared to all that, although Idaho has it's own beauties on a smaller scale. The pictures are beautiful. Tyson said we should just move there. Sometimes he just wants to get away from life. :) It would be a little far from all those we love though...maybe a visit someday. Can't wait for more post as you share about your time there.

  4. I dunno man, prettier than NZ? Tough call. I mean it's pretty but I think Lord of the Rings was done in the right place ;)

    1. I have always thought of Alaska and New Zealand as sisters, my Kiwi friend. They seem very similar in their magic and spirit. One day I want to visit NZ and see for myself! I agree that LOTR was done in the right place, by the right people. Though Middle Earth is easily imagined in the landscape and locations -- Alaska is too fierce, isolated, and unpredictable for great movie-making. Maybe one day someone will be able to tame Alaska and make a great movie. :-)
